Classwork and homework for 1/31/12

Today the students watched a short video to help them understand probability.  The video is from the website http://www.brainpop.com.  All students can access the site using the username and password found inside their agenda on page 21. The video is called "Basic Probability".

After reviewing probability, the students worked on a lab where they got to investigate how traits can be inherited.  A copy of the lab and follow-up questions are attached.

Classwork and homework for 1/30/12

Today we reviewed the terms genotype and phenotype and how DNA controls the characteristics of an organism.  The students then took a quiz on Mendel's experiments and the genetics vocabulary we have been working with for the past week.

The homework is to review the materials from chapter 5.  Tomorrow we will be completing a lab in class.

Classwork and homework for 1/27/12

Today we reviewed Mendel's experiments and then the students took a short quiz.  After the quiz we reviewed and graded the Directed Reading assignment from yesterday that covered Chapter 5-1.

The homework is to complete the Chapter 5-1 Section Review questions found on page 119 in the textbook.  All ten questions should be answered using complete sentences.  They will be collected and reviewed on Monday.  In addition, there will be another short quiz on Monday.

Classwork and homework for 1/26/12

Today students were introduced to some new vocabulary dealing with genetics (gene, genotype, phenotype, punnett squares) and then were asked to complete an assignment on the material found in Chapter 5-1.  A copy of the assignment is found below.

Classwork and homework for 1/25/12

Today we finished taking Cornell notes on Chapter 5-1 in the new science notebooks. We went into an in-depth explanation of Mendel's experiments in class and the students were given some information to draw that was not included in the powerpoint.

Homework is to write a summary for the Cornell Notes. The students must address and answer the three section objectives for their summary.  They are as follows

1) Explain the relationship between traits and heredity.

2) Describe the experiments of Gregor Mendel

3) Explain the difference between dominant and recessive traits.

Classwork and homework for 1/23/12

Today students began working on a new unit on Genetics.  The students set up new notebooks to be used in science class for the second half of the year.  They added copies of the science standards to the inside of the front cover of the notebook and they put copies of a sheet showing the standard lab format on the first page.  Pages 2 and 3 are reserved for a Table of Contents and the students added Chapter 5 Vocabulary words to page 4.  These words are to be defined for homework tonight.  A copy of the words is found below.

Students will need new notebooks on Monday, 1/23/12

Each student will need a new 1-subject notebook for the second half of the year.

Classwork and homework for 1/20/12

Today students did a few things

1) Took the Human Body Systems Unit Test

2) Turned in their Human Body Disorder Paper (the paper, KWL chart, and Research Guide were all due)

3) Turned in their weekly warmups

After the test was done they were asked to read Chapter 5.

The homework is to finish reading Chapter 5, finish the research paper if it was not turned in, and to bring in a new 1-subject notebook to start on Monday.
