Beginning Unit 7: Soilds and Measurement

We are embarking on a new unit--Unit 7--that will involve the study of simple geometric solids, estimating volumes and surface areas and applying formulas to compute volumes and surface areas. We will be spending approximatley 4 weeks on this unit while continuing to prepare for the CRCT in April. It is imperative that students work outside of the classroom to improve their math skills.

Wonderful things in January

Happy New Year! Happy Birthday (to me)! Happy M.L. King, Jr holiday! Happy Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States of America, Mr. Barack Obama! It's been a festive and busy month! We've made new goals for the new year and set our eyes on our future successes.

We've begun this semester with Unit 5: Symmetry and Plane Figures. Taking transformtions to the "dance floor" by incorporating the "Cha Cha Slide's" flips, slides and turns. We are currently converting cutomary and metric units of measure and anticipate taking the unit's post test next week.

End of Unit 4: One-step Equations & The Beginning of Unit 5: Symmetry and Plane Figures

The last week of school for 2008! WOW! They say "Time flies when you're having FUN!"

This week we will take the Unit 4 Post-Test. The student's have been equipped with a study guide (attached). Download Math6Unit4post-test Study Guide

In January we will begin Unit 5: Symmetry and Plane Figures (Lesson 8-11 Download Math6Unit5parentletter ). I hope that everyone has a safe winter break full of rest and fun with loved ones. Come back with new goals and ready to focus and put forth your best efforts. Muchas gracias por todo! Hasta proximo ano!

What's going on now?...Progress!

Since we've returned from break, we've been working on Unit 4: One step equations--Algebra. Last week we began with the foundation Lesson 1-4: Order of Operations. The first quiz grades on that lesson proved to be majority "B"s and "C"s. Bummer. But by the end of the week all but a few students got "A"s! :0D

This week we've been covering equations: lesson 2-5 Addition; lesson 2-6 Subtraction; lesson 2-7 Multiplication; and lesson 2-8 Division. We had a quiz today over lesson 2-5 & 2-6. Most did great! We'll have a quiz over Order of Operations and Equations on Thursday.

Our last week of school before winter break, we'll cover; lesson 3-9 Solving Equations with Decimals; lessons 5-5 & 5-10 Solving Equations with Fractions; and lesson 2-2 Translating between Words and Math.  The Unit 4 Post Test will be administered next week as well.

The grades for these December weeks are crucial. They can really improve student grades or really lower them. Please encourage students to give their 100% this last week of school to ensure outstanding grades on the semester report cards.

We look forward to meeting with you during our student led conferences--the week of January 26th.

Grade Reports/Deficiency Notices

Computer generated grade reports were sent home for each student. The intent is to bring attention to each student's academic standing in math before the end of the 2nd quarter and 1st semester. Students are asked to get the report signed by their gaurdian and return it by Friday, December 12, 2008--with any make-up assignments--for a grade.

Unit 4:One Step Equations

Greetings! I hope everyone had a restful week off and are ready to give it their all these next 3 weeks before our winter break and the end of our first semester. My break was fabulous. Thank you for asking. ;0)

Quite a few students did an exceptional job on the Unit 3b Post-Test scoring 80% or better! I'm so proud of them. Success in math requires an active learner who is willing to participate (use resources) and practice (completing class work and homework assignments). These students have taken ownership of their learning and are putting forth an inspiring effort. Thank you.

We're starting Unit 4: One Step Equations this week and this will take us to the end of the semester. Please find our related plan of study in the Parent Letter (link below). We will begin the unit in Lessons: 1-4 Order of Operations; 2-5 Addition Equations; 2-6 Subtration Equations; 2-7 Multiplication Equations; 2-8 Division Equations; 3-9 Solving Decimal Equations; and 5-10 Solving Fraction Equations.

Thxgiving Break Assignments & Make-Up Work

A memo and progress report for mathematics was sent home with students today. If your student was not in class today, you may access their progress report via "I-Parent". It lists the assignments of the class and the grade that the student received for each assignment. During the week off from school, students may complete any assignments (except for the study guide, quizzes or tests) that they received a “0”, “didn’t turn in” or “ “—no grade was assigned. All make-up assignments are due MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2008.

Since the class work assignments were in class assignments, students are to use the list below to complete the corresponding pages in thier textbooks for missing class work assignments:

  • Boardwork —page 749 Place Value problems 1-8 and Compare & Order Whole Numbers problems 1-8
  • Warm-ups 10/6 —page 750 Round Whole Numbers problems 1-6 & Round Decimals problems 1-6
  • Mad Minute —page 175 Greatest Common Factor problems 1-18
  • Warm-ups 10/31 —page 175 Greatest Common Factor problems 19-29
  • Fractions review —page 188 Simplifying problems 1-20
  • Mixed Fractions —page 188 Simplifying problems 21-41

Additionally, a Thanksgiving Break Math Packet has been assigned. It is due MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2008. Each worksheet is assigned a specific amount of points. Students may choose a combination of assignments to complete for the grade they’d like to receive. For example, a total of 50 points equals a 100%. A portion of the requirement can be fulfilled by completing the "Skills Tutor" computer assignment option for 20 points http://www.myskillstutor.com/login.jsp.

I hope that students will use this time away to complete and make up thier assignments. I encourage them to take this chance toreflect on the past 15 weeks, set new goals and come back to school well rested, refreshed and eager to excel. Be safe.
