We are currently working on a unit for Response to Literature in which we are reading a novel called Lupita Manana by Patricia Beatty about two youth who cross the boarder illegally into the United States from Mexico. There are several requirements for this unit (see below). The book is only available as a class set and cannot be taken home.
For this Response to Literature unit, you must:
- When reading as a class, following along to be prepared to read when called upon by. (Participation points)
- Create your own title for each chapter
- Write a paragraph summary of the day’s reading to create a synopsis of the book.
- Answer Daily Review Questions
- Develop a Character Analysis
- Create Story Plot Chart
- Draw a Map
- Spanish Translation Dictionary
Notes
• Direct Characterization – the author states the character’s traits
• Indirect Characterization – the author tells what a character looks like, does, says, as well as how other characters react to him/her. It is up to the reader to draw conclusions about the character based on this indirect information.
Chapter Summaries
• Come up with an appropriate title for each chapter
• Write a paragraph summary for each chapter in the book after reading that chapter (13 chapters)
• Include the main events that occurred and any significant details.
• You will put together all of your summaries for a synopsis at the end of the book
Character Analysis
- Describe (attitude, personality, looks, etc) the following characters using evidence from the book to justify your answer.
- Include the page # you found your evidence.
- Write in complete sentences.
