Students were given computer & video time to work on a self-selected project for book talk presentation due on Monday, December 4. Tuesday, November 29: Examples shown in Media Center of student produced projects. Students were given computer & video time to work on a self-selected project. All students who requested a video-cast were taped and can be viewed on Channel 4 at CMS in the mornings. Students who are not finished by the end of class will need to work on at home to present on Monday, December 4th or choose another option from the choice board. Students may revise and edit many of the projects. Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9.

Wednesday, November 30th: Create Cornell Notes about Persuasion found on pages 884 & 886 in literature text. Read models on pages 885, 888, 889 to answer the "Close Read" questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES. Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9. FYI: Progress reports went home with students today for a parent signature. Please make up any past due or missing assignments ASAP.

Thursday, December 1: Choose a reading strategy and apply as student reads AR book. After reading for a period of time, students wrote a reflection in the Writing Journal. Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9.

Friday, December 2: Students were taken to the computer lab to input Descriptive Narrative writing draft on www.essayscorer.com/ph/ga/cm. (ID = student ID # PW cobb2012) Students may revise up to 20 times. Suggestions are offered on the program. Students may log on to from home to continue revising essay until maxing out on attempts.  Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9. Make up any missing work from the listing on the School Progress report sent home on Wednesday ASAP.

Quarter 2 ends on December 22nd! Report cards will be finalized and sent home with your child upon return from Winter Break in January.

Monday, November 28: EQ-How am I persuaded? Writer's Workshop Writing Journal Prompt was "How do you convince your paretns to do something or buy you something?" Introduction to Persuasive Writing unit. Definiton of persuasive writing given for notes in Mini-Lessons section of Writing Journal. Discussion on discouraged techniques such as propoganda, coersion, manipulation and embellishment. Discussion on COUNTER ARGUMENT and example given and practiced in Writing Journal. Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9.

Tuesday, November 29: EQ-How do companies target (persuade) me? Students analyzed the persuasive techniques used in an I-Pod commerical. Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9.

Wednesday, November 30: EQ-How do companies target (persuade) me? Students analyzed the persuasive techniques used in a commerical advertising Windows. Students did a mini lesson and took Cornell Notes in Writing Journal on Target Audience, Persuasive Techniques and Production Techniques used in commercials to persuade consumers. Questions to identify each were given to copy in Writing Journal. Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9.

FYI: Progress reports went home with students today for a parent signature. Please make up any past due or missing assignments ASAP.

Thursday, December 1: EQ:How do companies persuade me? With a partner, students analyzed print ads to identify the target audience, the persuasive techniques and the production techniques.  Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9.

Friday, December 2: EQ:How can I improve my reading comprehension? Students used a reading strategy as they read in AR book or literature text, if they did not bring own library book. Students must bring AR book to class daily. Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Take AR Quiz as needed. Quiz #5 should be completed by 12/9. Using the Progress Report sent home on Wednesday, make-up missing work in all classes before going to Winter Break!

November 7: EQ: How can I show proficieny in writing on expository essay? Selected topic for final assessment of Expository Unit. Utilize the Writing Process stepsL (1) Prewriting and (2) Drafting. The performance task  is writing an expository essay. Student have a choice of cause/effect topic or compare/contrast topic. Two writing prompt choices are below:

Option #1 What's Cooking? All nationalities have special foods. Burritos and tacos are two popular Mexican dishes. Ravioli and lasagna are famous Italian dishes. Choose any two international dishes and compare the ingredients used, appreance and taste.

Option #2 Think about a time period at your school that your would like to change such as lengthening the lunch period or adding study hall at the end of the school day. Write an essay that examines the cause and effect of this change.

 HOMEWORK: Read 20-45 minutes in student selected AR book on ZPD. Take an AR Quiz as needed. Today is due date for Quiz #2 to be taken.

Notes in Writing Journal on Descriptive Writing expectations and suggestions (see Literature textbook pg R34-35).  Homework: Read in AR book 20-45 minutes. Complete AR Quiz. Next AR Quiz (#3) is due 11/18. NOTE: Missing assignment sheet for all classes was distributed during ELT to every student at CMS. Please make up any missing work ASAP. 

Writing Prompt: Clothing can be associated with particular events or circumstances, such as a lucky hat or a sweatshirt you always bring on a family trip. Identify a piece of clothing you associated with a special event in your life. In an autobiographical narrative, tell the story of what makes this piece of clothing special.

November 14-15  EQ: How can I show profiency in Expository Writing?  Reviewed predicate adjectives. These were a revision strategy to add details on the draft of the essay. Students went to media center to work on inputting the unit performance task (Expository Essay) from their draft into computer program called ESSAY SCORER.  Students were encouraged to use the program to revise using assistance from the program. The log-in =student #  NOTE: Students may continue to revise up to the 20 allotted times anytime before the end of the quarter but if done so after 11/15, the teacher must be informed to review the check the revised score before it may be adjusted accordingly.  Homework:  Predicate Adjective Worksheet.
