Team Identity Assignment

Teams!  Today you will select a college identity for your group.  Each class will pick a college from a different conference and create a poster using information that you find out about that college.  The poster must include:  the name of the college, the team members, the school colors, the school nickname, and the location.  See the following examples:

Your poster should be colorful.  Feel free to add any symbols or images that are related to the school.

AVID Assignments

All students need to be prepared for certain assignments every week.  Nearly every week we have a binder check on Friday.  The binder check is designed to assess multiple things:  organization, notes, and the agenda.  Students earn points for Cornell notes that they take in other classes, how well they use their agenda, and the organization of the binder.  Parents can assist students by flipping through their child's binder once a week.  If there are a number of papers that are loose or in pockets/folders, the student needs to spend some time putting their papers in order.

Also, students come to tutorial twice a week in the AVID class.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students work with AVID tutors to answer the difficult questions they have from their academic classes.  The AVID students must be prepared by bringing in questions about the material they are struggling with

AVID Student Tip

A large part of being a good student boils down to good habits.  When it comes to homework, tests, and projects, you need to develop positive habits.  Create a routine for when you get home.  Many of our lives are extremely busy (school, sports, clubs, church, friends, etc.).  You need to devote a specific time every day to completing homework.  The first thing you should do is to look over your agenda and make a quick plan of attack.  Decide which assignments you should complete first.  If you have an assignment that you know you will enjoy more than the rest, save it for last.  Finally, if you have little or no homework for that evening, look at your monthly calendar and begin studying for that unit test or start working on that project.

AVID Parent Tip

Parents,

Please make it a habit to check your child's agenda on a regular basis.  Every AVID student is required to write down their assignments for each class in their agenda.  If a student has no homework for a class, then the student should have written "no homework."  It is important that AVID students are working on homework every night.  Even if they have no specific assignments for a particular evening, they should be studying for tests, working on projects, or revising their Cornell notes.

Parents and Students,

In addition to the two tutoring times available with me (Monday after school and Tuesday before school), morning tutorial has begun.  Monday through Thursday, students have the opportunity to work with a teacher in either Language Arts or Math.  This service is 100% free.  If a student is performing poorly in either of these areas, he or she should take advantage of this free service.  Please download and read the documents for the schedule.  If you have any questions, please respond to this post.
